Assembly of First Nations Executive Committee Passes Resolution in Support of the Family of Mr. Jon Wells of the Kainai/Blood Tribe

(November 1, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) — The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Executive Committee announced today the passing of AFN Resolution 62/2024, Support for the family of Mr. Jon Wells of the Kainai/Blood Tribe. The Resolution was moved by Chief Roy Fox of the Blood Tribe in Alberta and seconded by Chief Joe Miskokomon of Chippewas of the Thames in Ontario. It was approved by consensus by the AFN Executive Committee.

"The AFN Executive Committee is proud to adopt this Resolution in support of the Wells family," said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. "Far too many police encounters with First Nations become fatal incidents that are never properly investigated. The loss of Jon Wells on September 17, 2024, due to an interaction with the Calgary Police Service is an unacceptable tragedy. We will follow the mandate of this Resolution by fully supporting the Wells family and the Kainai/Blood Tribe in seeking an adequate public inquiry into the incident. We also call on the Mayor of the City of Calgary, the Chair of the Calgary Police Commission, the Provincial Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to provide resources for, and participate in, a transparent and impartial investigation. The AFN will take every measure to support the Wells family and the Kainai/Blood Tribe in their pursuit of justice."
