Assembly of First Nations: Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Parliamentary Wrap-Up – September 2023 – June 2024

Assembly of First Nations

AFN is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations-in-Assembly through resolutions.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is sharing the Parliamentary Wrap-Up Report, highlighting its parliamentary advocacy over the past year. In addition to parliamentary written submissions and committee appearances by representatives of the AFN, the AFN developed reports including the National Climate Strategy, the Position Paper on Bill S-13, An Act to amend the Interpretation Act and to make related amendments to other Acts, and the MMIWG Calls for Justice Progress Report.

The AFN participated in seven studies led by the House of Commons Committees and three studies led by the Senate. Some of these studies are still active, and some have concluded with reports from Parliamentary Committees to the Government of Canada for consideration. In May 2024, the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs released a report entitled "We Belong to the Land: The Restitution of Land to Indigenous Nations," to which the AFN contributed via written submission.

Moving forward, the AFN will continue to ensure First Nations priorities are brought forward in both the House of Commons and the Senate. If you have any questions or feedback regarding the Wrap-Up Report, please contact Paul Koval, Senior Policy Coordinator, Strategic Policy Coordination, by email at pkoval@afn.ca.

Thank you,
Assembly of First Nations (AFN)
